This cosmetic procedure has become extremely popular in recent years, it not only looks good to have white teeth, and it also gives you a confidence boost when you see your new smile. We all get discoloured teeth in our adult life time; it is often due to smoking and the excesses of fad foods and drinks such as coloured liqueurs and red wine. One of the most popular methods is the intense light format; this is available in salons, beauty parlours and in some cases a home visit. The treatment is carried out by a trained technician and not a dentist, which helps to keep down the cost. The technician will first inspect your gums to see if any of the root is exposed, if a gum disease is prevalent then in some cases the procedure is not possible. Next comes a gum shield that keeps the mouth open and protects all the flesh around the teeth. A gel is coated onto the teeth and an intense light source is aimed at the exposed enamel. The gel is agitated by the light and helps the enamel to run; this is what gives the teeth its nice white shade again. The treatment takes about an hour in total; this involves three fifteen minute sessions with a rest in between. The light is warm and the procedure is a comfortable one with you usually lying down. After this you will be given a list of `Do`s and Don’ts` to keep the teeth whiter for longer, it will last a good year if you follow the recommendations. You have to avoid all the things that made your teeth discoloured in the first place, but the rewards are good enough to keep you on the straight and narrow. Many patients are rewarded with a more confident smile makeover; this in itself will boost your self worth. The cost is variable, but it is between £200 and £400 depending on where you live and how much competition there is around, so shop around before deciding on the final choice. Dentists don’t normally provide this treatment, most cosmetic dentists will offer you a veneer to cover your discoloured teeth, and this is good for one tooth or a whole line, but is much more expensive to start with. The treatment however lasts from 3-15 years depending on which type you have, but it is an effective way of obtaining a Hollywood style smile.
